the Message...

I've been thinking about these verses the last couple of days for myself and our church in Lawrence.

This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

1 John 1:5-6

Father, reveal to us the light, that we may dwell with You there.

A Great Day to be a Wildcat...

K-State: 41, No. 7 Texas: 21

Second year in a row K-State has upset Texas. It's going to be sad next weekend for my KU friends...

the Good Ole Days...

Last night, I had the opportunity to hear my good friend Luke speak at K-State Ichthus in Manhattan, KS. Afterwards Luke and I continued our tradition of getting beer at Old Chicago.

One semester in college, Luke and I weekly met at the OC while a house church was meeting at his house. At the time, I wasnt too sold on the taste of beer, so I stuck to Woodchuck Draft Cider. I've long since graduated to bigger and better things, but whenever I walk into Old Chicago, Woodchuck sounds great.

And it was.

Self-love and Sharing it with the World...

In late October, I'm going to a conference with some friends at which we're leading a workshop. One of our preparatory tasks was to create a personal bio. In embracing the narcissistic nature of blogging, I'm posting it:

Graham Ripple is a church planter and pastor. He lives in Lawrence, Kansas where he is a community pastor for a network of house churches. A former Rhodes Scholar candidate, recent college graduate and now washed-up engineer, Graham enjoys lively conversation, writing, time in coffee shops and traveling as much as possible.

It's not the greatest, but this is tough stuff. So here's the deal: embrace your deep self-love and write your own bio. Post it here because the world wants to read it! Wait, did I say the world? I meant I want to read it.

My Favorite Days...

I woke up this morning to my favorite of days: cold, overcast, and on the cusp of rain.

What does this mean?

Hours in a coffee shop before work at 3p. Ahhhhh.

Glory...

I just shared this quote from Lewis' the Weight of Glory with a friend, and was, again, touched by the power and simplicity of his words.

It may be possible for each to think too much of his own potential glory hereafter; it is hardly possible for him to think too often or too deeply about that of his neighbor. The load, or weight, or burden of my neighbor's glory should be laid on my back, a load so heavy that only humility can carry it, and the backs of the proud will be broken. It is serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest and most uninteresting person you can talk to may one day be a creature which, if you saw it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship, or else a horror and a corruption such as you now meet, if at all, only in a nightmare. All day long we are, in some degree, helping each other to one or other of these destinations. It is in the light of these overwhelming possibilities, it is with the awe and circumspection proper to them, that we should conduct all our dealings with one another, all friendships, all loves, all play, all politics. There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations - these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub and exploit - immortal horrors or everlasting splendors. This does not mean that we are to be perpetually solemn. We must play. But our merriment must be of that kind (and it is, in fact, the merriest kind) which exists between people who have, from the outset, taken each other seriously - no flippancy, no superiority, no presumption. And our charity must be real and costly love, with deep feeling for the sins in spite of which we love the sinner - no mere tolerance, or indulgence which parodies love as flippancy parodies merriment. Next to the Blessed Sacrament itself, your neighbor is the holiest object presented to your senses. If he is your Christian neighbor; he is holy in almost the same way, for in him also Christ vere latitat - the glorifier and the glorified, Glory Himself, is truly hidden.

Oh, that we would live with such weight.

Waking Up...

I went to bed Thursday night thinking about sleep. I woke up Friday morning thinking about waking up. Go figure.

Oh how different the experiences of waking up can be. When I awoke Friday morning, reality came crashing down suffocating the ideas and dreams from the previous night. What was likely and feasible a few hours past, seemed so unthinkable that my time dreaming felt wasted. In those times, you shake it off and move on... or try to fall back asleep. Maybe a second waking will bring a better start!

Other times, the morning hits your senses like a deep breath of fresh air. Opening your eyes, you proclaim with Jacob, 'How awesome is this place! Surely God is in this place and I knew it not. This is none other than the house of God and the doorway to Heaven.' Full life is before you... completely accessible and waiting to be grasped.

Despite the chasm of differences, in both situations you awake to reality. Frederick Buechner describes the Gospel in terms of a Comedy, a Tragedy, and a Fairy Tale. Life can probably be articulated pretty similarly.

Comedy.

Tragedy.

Fairy Tale.

Some days we laugh. Some days we cry. Some days we shake our head at the wonder of it all.

Can't Sleep...

Dont you love it when you go to bed early and cant fall asleep. Having to get up early, you practice every ounce of discipline and head to bed at a reasonable hour. Yet, instead of falling asleep you just lay there... thinking.

I think about the day and what went down... I start dreaming about all these great possibilities... then, I suddenly realize that I should be asleep by now, so I start thinking about falling asleep... soon that turns into thinking about thinking about falling asleep... my mind drifts and suddenly I'll have all these incredible and brilliant ideas only to forget them a few seconds later... soon, I'm back thinking about how I wish I was sleeping and really should be...

it's a killer cycle. counting sheep never worked for me.

So what do I do? I turn on the lights, pop in the iPod (Snow Patrol and the Postal Service) and start emailing and blogging. It seems like the right thing to do. Hopefully, I'll be able to crash soon.

I went to bed early because I'm heading to OKC tomorrow morning with my dear friend, and fellow community pastor, Katie, for Bridgeway's Fall Leaders Retreat. My time there is always refreshing... connecting with friends, hearing their stories, and being encouraged in learning from this man Jesus. It's like going home! For an extra bonus some friends from K-State will also be in attendance. It will be a party!!

Another Reason Why I love Lawrence...

Yesterday, on break from Urban (Day 2... a blast), a group of protesters were marching down Mass. Not too uncommon for Lawrence, but what were these radicals raising their fist at...? None other than the indecent working conditions at Starbucks.

To the beat of a djembe...

Star-bucks lies; Let their workers Union-ize!
Star-bucks lies; Let their workers Union-ize!
Star-bucks lies; Let their workers Union-ize!

Check out their grievances at www.starbucksunion.org.

I have no words for this experience, except that Im sad I didnt have my camera with me.

the New Job...

I have a part-time gig at Urban Outfitters in Lawrence. I start tomorrow. I'm still looking for a full-time job in addition, but am excited to be at Urban. Stop on by and pick up some tight threads!
